"My feelings for the past are not nostalgic or overly sentimental. For what in our lives is not the past? Each stroke of the clock puts the last second behind us. And we strive, after all, to live in the present. What orients me to the present are any number of stunning, if ordinary, wonders, like sunlight moving across my studio floor as the day progresses, or the blossoms on our magnolia grand flora each June. The attempt to capture them in paint forces me to exist in the here and now, in the exquisite present. The word ‘exquisite’ signifies a state of greatly heightened sensitivity and overpowering feeling. And what could embody this more than the full blown magnolia blossom, with its luscious, sensuous petals and dreamy citrus smell? Magnolias are so sensitive, that a cut magnolia will last only a single day before it starts to turn brown. In fact, if you handle a magnolia petal too roughly, you don’t see it right away, but within several hours the tender spot will start to turn brown, to bruise. The remains of the past and the exquisite present have given me an embarrassment of riches to paint, and as I myself get older, I am grateful for each day that I have to pursue them."

This group exhibition revolves around the work of Charles Hall, and includes work by family and extended family who had an affinity with Charles and his life as a painter. Included are Charles’ former wife Linda Carey, daughter Kathleen Carey Hall, graduate school friend Mary Barnes, academic colleague Bill Barnes, and former Columbus College of Art and Design (CCAD) student Tamie Beldue.
Charles Hall did his undergraduate work at the Rhode Island School of Design, and his graduate work at the University of Arizona, where he met Linda, Mary and Bill. He was a devoted teacher of painting and drawing at the CCAD for 18 years until his untimely death at age 50 after an 8-year battle with cancer.
