In Metaphorical Ambiguity and Other Mysteries, familiar objects are arranged within quiet spaces. This body of work invites intentional observation and an open interpretation from the viewer. The paintings are an aesthetic Rorschach test, where the personal interpretation of the viewer completes the narrative of the piece. It is important to me that the viewer understands the power that they hold and that they are an active participant in the artwork.

This series of paintings has deeply rooted, visual metaphors that directly arise from my personal narratives and history. However, I have reshaped the allegories to be intentionally cryptic, not to conceal, but to create room for dialogue and conversation about what we see, how we interpret, and what we choose to imbue in the work. The work welcomes multiplicity and mystery, allowing ambiguity to be a bridge between painter and viewer. Inviting the audience to develop an active conversation with the compositions allows new ways of seeing, perceiving, and approaching artwork.

“A Light in Many Rooms”: Matt Klos & Special Guests

Showing November 15, 2025 - January 10, 2026

Opening Reception: Saturday, November 15, 2-5pm, Following Matt Klos’ Gallery Talk at the Daura Museum of Art

Matt Klos will be exhibiting a solo exhibition of paintings completed in Staunton VA over an eight year period. His attraction to Staunton came as a result of his friendship with Philip & Elizabeth Geiger and their artist son Martin. These paintings, made on location, show various shifts of light and mood.

Accompanying this exhibition Klos has curated a group of contemporary masters of the interior motif including: Abigail Dudley, David Jewell, Mark Karnes, Gillian Pederson-Krag, Erin Raedeke, Daniel Riesmeyer, Charles Ritchie, and Philip Geiger, in whose honor both exhibits have been assembled. In the tradition of the Nabis and the Intimists before them, these artists show us spaces that are at once familiar and oddly otherworldly as they touch upon the sublime.
