Mina Mohtasham

Mina Mohtasham received her BFA in Painting from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA) in 2021 and continued her training at the Lyme Academy of Fine Arts where she taught until 2025. Although painting remains at the core of her artistic practice, her work extends across drawing and sculpture, reflecting a sustained interest in exploring form, material, and visual perception through multiple disciplines.

Throughout her academic and professional career, Mohtasham has been recognized with numerous awards and honors. These include the Raymond D. Estelle Rubens Travel Scholarship, first place in both the Susan McDowell Eakins Figure Painting Prize and the Stimson Figure Sculpting Competition at PAFA, as well as first place in the Salmagundi Club Annual Figure Drawing Competition. She has also been awarded the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation Grant in both 2021 and 2025. Her work has been exhibited internationally, and she currently teaches drawing and painting through workshops and educational programs around the world.

Working primarily from direct observation, Mohtasham's practice is rooted in a deep engagement with the natural world and the subtle poetry of everyday experience. She is particularly drawn to the effects of light, atmosphere, and the quiet presence of ordinary moments, seeking to capture not only the physical appearance of her subjects but also their emotional resonance. While grounded in representational painting, her work is continually informed by an interest in abstraction, color relationships, and collage. These influences introduce moments of spatial ambiguity, flattening, and compositional tension that challenge traditional illusionistic space and invite a more active visual experience.

Drawing upon a rigorous foundation in classical techniques while engaging with contemporary artistic ideas, Mohtasham creates works that exist between observation and invention. Her paintings, drawings, and sculptures balance technical precision with expressive experimentation, resulting in images that feel both timeless and distinctly contemporary.
