Questions about our paintings? Let us know!
Matt Klos’ solo exhibition of paintings were completed in Staunton VA over an eight year period. His attraction to Staunton came because of his friendship with Philip & Elizabeth Geiger and their artist son Martin. The family relocated to Staunton from Charlottesville upon Phil’s retirement from UVA and moved into a grand brick home emblematic of the style and charm for which the town is known. Where most professional artists have a house with a studio the Geiger’s have instead a house that is primarily a studio reserving only the kitchen and some bedrooms for non-studio life. The entire home was a staging ground for various motifs. A painter's paradise. Klos would visit for short stints to paint and spend time with these artists he admired, taking advantage of their generosity. Often a visit would last only a few days, but those days would be filled with painting and conversation: mornings with the model, afternoons in the landscape, and evenings in the interior.
In addition to this body of work Klos has curated an exhibition of artists who have focused on interiors including, Abigail Dudley, David Jewell, Mark Karnes, Gillian Pederson-Krag, Erin Raedeke, Daniel Reismeyer, and Philip Geiger, in whose honor both exhibits have been assembled. All of these artists deal masterfully with the complexity of dichotomous light sources and views of the inside and the outside realms. In the tradition of the Nabis and the Intimists before them, these artists show us our spaces that are at once familiar and oddly otherworldly as they touch upon the sublime.
