Ron Boehmer

Ron Boehmer was born in Baltimore and studied at the Maryland Institute College of Art, receiving a BFA degree cum laude, in 1971.

From 1972 to 1975 Ron did graduate study at the University of Pennsylvania, receiving an MFA in 1975. While at Penn he had opportunity to study with several notable American painters including Neil Welliver, Janet Fish, Brice Marden, Alex Katz, Paul Resika, Rackstraw Downes, and Paul Georges.

After completion of graduate studies he lived in rural Pennsylvania where he began his career as a painter, focusing for ten years primarily in plein air painting. Since moving to Virginia in 1978 Boehmer has worked as Visual Arts Program Director for the Lynchburg fine Arts Center (1978-1987), and has taught courses in studio art and art history at Central Virginia Community College, Lynchburg College, Hollins University, The Virginia School of the Arts, the Lynchburg Fine Arts Center, the Beverley Street Studio School in Staunton, VA and the Lynchburg Art Club.

In addition he has served in the capacity of judge/juror, consultant, and workshop instructor for various arts and cultural and educational organizations in Virginia, Connecticut, Massachusetts, and North Carolina. 

Ron Boehmer is a co-founder and Trustee Emeritus of the Beverley Street Studio School in Staunton, VA, where he still teaches regular weekly classes in painting and drawing.

Boehmer is recognized as one of Virginia’s foremost landscape painters. His work has been included in several significant museum and touring exhibitions including: “The Virginia Landscape- a Cultural History” at the Virginia Historical Society; “Within Our borders- the Virginia Landscape” at the Hermitage foundation Museum in Richmond, VA; and “Experience the Lames: Lynchburg’s Pathway to the World” at the Lynchburg Museum System.

Since 1984 Boehmer has exhibited in over 130 solo, group, and juried exhibitions and festivals, receiving more than 65 awards in painting or drawing. Among these awards are over 35 fourth place or better awards, including more than 19 Best- in- Show Awards.

Boehmer has been included or featured in articles in Plein Air Magazine, and Lynchburg Magazine. He has been featured in the recent publication, 100 PLEIN AIR PAINTERS of the MID-ATLANTIC, by Gary Pendleton, Schiffer Publishing, 2014 and THE VIRGINIA LANDSCAPE- a CULTURAL HISTORY by James C. Kelly and William M.S. Rasmussen, Howell Press, 2000.

Boehmer’s work has been described as being….”of museum quality”….” beautifully composed” and as having…”uncommon richness, pervasive serenity, and pure perfection”.

His work is included in numerous private, corporate, and institutional collections. He is currently represented by the following galleries: Nichols Gallery- Barboursville, VA; Carspecken- Scott Gallery, Wilmington, Del;  and Lin-Dor Gallery- Roanoke; VA and Main Street Gallery, Annapolis, MD.
